Terms of Use
Important Construction & Safety Notice
StairMark is a calculation and reference tool only. It does not replace professional trade judgement, applicable building codes, structural engineering, architectural review, or qualified on-site measurements. Always independently verify dimensions and statutory requirements before purchasing, marking, cutting, or installing lumber and building materials.
1. About StairMark
StairMark is an iOS application designed to assist carpenters, deck builders, general contractors, framers, and DIY woodworkers with planning and calculating stair and stair-stringer geometry (the “App”). StairMark is developed and provided by Joe Walker (“StairMark”, “we”, “us”, or “our”), located in the United Kingdom.
Features provided by the App include total rise and run calculations, equalized riser and tread calculations, stringer length and pitch angle estimations, framing-square tongue/blade layout marks, stringer visual diagrams, common stair-limit reference checks, local project saving, and PDF cut sheet generation in Imperial and Metric units.
By downloading, installing, accessing, or using StairMark, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Use (“Terms”). If you do not agree to these Terms, do not install or use the App.
2. Important Construction and Safety Disclaimer
StairMark is a calculation and reference tool only.
Stair construction involves serious physical safety considerations, structural load requirements, and rigorous legal codes. StairMark does NOT replace:
- Professional carpentry judgement, skill, and experience
- National, regional, or municipal building regulations and statutory standards
- Local building codes (such as the International Residential Code / IRC, UK Building Regulations Approved Document K, or regional equivalents)
- Licensed structural engineering advice
- Registered architectural plans and specifications
- Proper on-site measurement practices (including accounting for finished floor thickness, decking overhangs, settlement, and uneven ground)
- Qualified trade or building inspection services
You must personally and independently verify all measurements, physical clearances, headroom limits, and applicable building requirements before purchasing materials, marking stringers, cutting lumber, or installing stairs.
3. Accuracy of Calculations
All mathematical calculations generated by StairMark depend directly upon the numerical dimensions, preferences, and assumptions entered by you.
Real-world construction conditions frequently diverge from mathematical ideals due to variations in lumber thickness, crowning, warping, existing slab slopes, decking materials, and finished floor coverings. You are solely responsible for checking and confirming all critical dimensions, total rise measurements, and stringer drop deductions on the job site before cutting.
4. Common Stair Limits
StairMark may display guidance indicators comparing your dimensions against commonly referenced stair limits (such as standard riser heights, minimum tread runs, or typical 2R + T rules).
Results or indicators such as “Within limit”, “Optimal”, or “Passes common limits” do NOT constitute building-code approval, regulatory certification, or legal sign-off.
Mandatory building requirements vary widely by country, state, county, municipality, occupancy classification, and project type (e.g. residential interior vs. exterior deck vs. commercial). It is your sole responsibility to ensure your build satisfies the specific jurisdiction where the work is erected.
5. Stringer Layouts and Framing-Square Marks
The diagrams, stringer cut outlines, and framing-square tongue and blade layout measurements provided by StairMark are mathematical layout aids designed to assist trade workflows.
Material marking, saw kerf allowances, top hanger adjustments, bottom riser reductions (accounting for tread thickness), and throat/waist depth requirements must be independently checked and laid out using physical measuring tools prior to executing any cuts.
6. PDF Cut Sheets
StairMark allows users to export project summaries and PDF cut sheets for job-site reference. Generated PDF documents are informational project aids intended for quick site consultation.
Generated PDF cut sheets are NOT:
- Engineering drawings or structural blueprints
- Architectural working drawings
- Building-control approval submissions or permits
- Certified construction plans
- Professional trade specifications
7. StairMark Pro
StairMark may offer initial or trial calculations at no charge so you can test the calculation interface.
Enhanced capabilities are made available through StairMark Pro. StairMark Pro is offered as a one-time, non-consumable in-app purchase. It is not a subscription, and there are no ongoing or recurring subscription fees.
Depending on current product features, StairMark Pro unlocks complete capabilities, which may include:
- Unlimited stair and stringer calculations
- Unlimited saved projects and job profiles
- PDF cut sheet export and sharing
- Comprehensive project and layout workflows
The purchase price for StairMark Pro is displayed directly in the App Store purchase interface prior to confirmation and may vary by currency and region.
8. Apple App Store Purchases
All financial transactions and in-app purchases are billed and processed by Apple Inc. through the Apple App Store. StairMark does not process, handle, or store your payment card details.
Eligible previous purchases can be restored using the Apple account associated with the original purchase through the “Restore Purchases” feature in the App. Any requests for refunds, order cancellations, or billing queries are handled directly by Apple under Apple’s Media Services Terms and Conditions and applicable statutory consumer rights.
9. Local Data
StairMark stores your project records, measurements, and preferences locally on your iOS device. We do not operate a remote synchronization server for your job files.
You are responsible for maintaining appropriate backups of your device (e.g. through Apple iCloud Backup or Mac/PC Finder backups). Deleting the App, wiping your device, or experiencing hardware failure may result in locally stored stair project records being permanently lost.
10. Acceptable Use
You agree to use StairMark only for lawful purposes and in accordance with these Terms. You agree not to:
- Reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, or attempt to derive the source code of the App, except to the extent such activity is expressly permitted by applicable law
- Modify, adapt, translate, or create derivative works based upon the App, except to the extent such activity is expressly permitted by applicable law
- Circumvent or attempt to defeat any security, copy protection, or entitlement verification systems
- Rent, lease, lend, sell, sublicense, or distribute the App to third parties
- Use the App in any manner that could damage, disable, overburden, or impair the App or related infrastructure
11. Intellectual Property
The StairMark application, including its software code, interface design, graphic marks, branding, algorithms, and documentation, is the exclusive intellectual property of Joe Walker and is protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws of the United Kingdom, the United States, and other countries.
Your purchase or download grants you a personal, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the App on iOS devices that you own or control, subject to the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions.
12. Availability and Changes
We strive to provide a reliable, high-quality application. However, we reserve the right to update, modify, bug-fix, or improve the App over time. We do not guarantee that the App will remain compatible with all future versions of iOS or older hardware models, although reasonable efforts are made to support current and supported Apple operating systems.
13. No Professional Advice
Information provided by StairMark is intended for technical reference and convenience. Neither the App nor its developer is engaged in rendering structural engineering, architectural design, legal code compliance, or certified construction surveying advice. You should consult a qualified engineer, architect, or local building inspector for structural and regulatory sign-off.
14. Limitation of Liability
To the extent permitted by applicable law, Joe Walker / StairMark shall not be liable for any indirect, special, incidental, or consequential losses, or for any loss of profits, revenue, contracts, anticipated savings, or goodwill, nor for any losses, costs, timber or material waste, or project delays arising from or in connection with:
- Incorrect or inaccurate user-entered measurements or parameters
- Failure by the user to independently check and verify calculations, angles, and layout marks before purchasing, marking, cutting, or installing materials
- Failure to check and comply with applicable local building regulations, building codes, or statutory requirements

- Material waste, spoiled lumber, or re-work caused by unverified measurements or cutting errors
- Loss or corruption of locally stored project information, calculations, or device settings
- Use of StairMark outside its intended purpose as a calculation and reference tool
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or any other liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited.
15. Consumer Rights
If you are a consumer residing in the United Kingdom, the European Economic Area, or another jurisdiction with mandatory consumer protection legislation, nothing in these Terms removes, restricts, or undermines your statutory rights under applicable consumer law (including the UK Consumer Rights Act 2015).
16. Third-Party Services
StairMark integrates with third-party technical infrastructure provided by Apple (for distribution and in-app purchase billing) and RevenueCat (for purchase entitlement validation). Your use of the App is also subject to any applicable third-party terms of agreement, and you agree to comply with such terms.
17. Termination
You may terminate this agreement at any time simply by deleting the App from your device. We may terminate or suspend your licence to use the App if you violate any material provision of these Terms.
18. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time to reflect changes to StairMark, our services, or applicable legal or regulatory requirements. When we make changes, we will update the “Last Updated” date above. Where required by applicable law, we will provide appropriate notice of material changes. Updated Terms will apply from their stated effective date, subject to any mandatory rights you may have under applicable law.
19. Governing Law
These Terms, their subject matter, and their formation are governed by the laws of England and Wales. You and Joe Walker agree that the courts of England and Wales shall have jurisdiction, except that if you are a consumer resident in another country or territory, you may also bring legal proceedings in your local courts in accordance with mandatory consumer protection rules.
20. Apple-Specific Terms
As required by Apple Inc., you acknowledge and agree that:
- These Terms are concluded solely between you and Joe Walker / StairMark, and not with Apple Inc. StairMark, not Apple, is solely responsible for the App and its content.
- Apple has no obligation whatsoever to furnish any maintenance or support services with respect to the App.

- In the event of any third-party claim that the App or your possession and use of the App infringes a third party’s intellectual property rights, StairMark, not Apple, is responsible for the investigation, defence, settlement, and discharge of such claim.
- You represent and warrant that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated as a “terrorist supporting” country, and that you are not listed on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- Apple and Apple’s subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms. Upon your acceptance of these Terms, Apple will have the right (and will be deemed to have accepted the right) to enforce these Terms against you as a third-party beneficiary.
